The Minister of Health will be concentrating on her own health in the coming weeks as she undergoes treatment for breast cancer.
Lela Evans was diagnosed a few weeks ago, and is scheduled to undergo a mastectomy.
She initially detected the lump herself, and she encourages the public to be proactive with their health.
Evans had a needle biopsy on budget day and her doctor tells her they caught it early.
“They don’t think it’s spread to the lymph nodes, so it looks like I’m quite fortunate, it looks like I caught it early.” She says it serves as an important reminder “through self-exam, and looking and finding lumps, you can catch the breast cancer early, which is hopefully what I’ve done.”
In terms of her portfolios, Evans says she has a lot of support from the premier, her caucus and her staff and she intends to continue working from home as she is able, even if she isn’t always visible to the public in the weeks ahead.
She says “based on what aftercare is needed, I’ll probably be back shortly. But for me also…I have to practice what I preach, and I have to be mindful of making sure that I’m resting, I’m looking after myself, and I’m remaining healthy. Which is something I think I’ve done all my life. And also the Premier’s Office has been very mindful of that as well.”
