One man was taken to hospital with injuries which are serious, but not life-threatening after two crashes in pea soup fog at the Doe Hills this morning – one of which involved a collision with an ambulance parked at the scene.
In the first incident, two cars collided on the Trans Canada at the Doe Hills around 9:00 this morning. The Whitbourne Fire Department had to use the Jaws of Life to extract a passenger from one of the vehicles.
While that operation was unfolding, an Eastern Health ambulance on the scene was struck by a another vehicle. That accident was only about 100 feet from the original accident according to Fire Chief Jamie Budden.
He says those types of situations happen all too often when people fail to slow down and give first responders some space.
A second ambulance had to be called in to replace the heavily damaged one at the scene.
The injured man was then rushed to hospital in Clarenville.
Original Story:
Pea soup fog has enveloped the Doe Hills area on the TCH, and there have been accidents involving several vehicles.
The Whitbourne Fire Department says traffic is moving, but slowly and that will likely change as first responders arrive on the scene.
