For the second time in just over two months, an incident which could have been deadly has occurred on the Hibernia platform.

The incident occurred just after 5 a.m. last Saturday.

According to the C-NLOER, a pipe deck crew was preparing casing joints, each of which weighs 2,100 pounds, for transfer to the rig.

As two of the casings were being lifted by a crane, they separated from the machine’s magnets and dropped about six-and-a-half feet to the deck below.

One of the casing joints hit the leg of a worker, who had to be taken ashore for medical attention.

Operations in the area were immediately suspended, and the crane was taken out of service. Following an inspection, no deficiencies were identified and the machine went back into operation.

Due to the weight of the object and distance travelled, the offshore regulator.

Hibernia Management & Development Company (HMDC) is investigating the cause.

Another incident which could have been fatal occurred on Hibernia on May 12. The C-NLOER is continuing to follow-up on that situation.
