Two men have been arrested in connection with a brazen shooting at a festival in Toronto a month ago that left two people dead and several people injured – some with injuries which were life altering.

The two accused, each 18 years old, are up on two counts of first degree murder and five counts of attempted murder.

Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw did not release any information on the two accused regarding their history and whether they were known to police.

As he did at a news conference earlier in the week, Chief Demkiw called for changes in the justice system so that people who have guns are not released by the system to take to the streets and commit further crimes.

“We are looking at people out in our community serving sentences for having illegal firearms who then, while serving sentences in the community, go out and commit more crimes – sometimes killing people,” said the chief.

“That’s a problem in my view. I’m telling you that this is a problem. We have violent offenders in our communities serving sentences and then going out and committing more crimes – sometimes taking a life.

“That’s a problem and it needs to be addressed.”
