The vice-chair of the advisory group Friends of St. John’s Public Library is disappointed that no solution has yet been found for the relocation of the Michael Donovan Library.
The well-used library had to vacate its former premises on Topsail Road in June and an RFP was issued to find it a new home, but there were no bites.
Josh Smee says that’s disappointing.
“It serves a big chunk of the city, it was really well-loved, well-used, so that whole end of the city is out of range now, and has to go pretty far to their next library branch. So we know it’s impacting folks for sure.”
“It’s a really sad thing, there’s some great staff who work out of that library who are working elsewhere until a new spot opens up. We know people are waiting with baited breath for a new spot.”
The provincial government has indicated that it is committed to keeping a public library in the general area, and the department of education says it’s heading back to the drawing board to find a solution.
