Those who lay down their lives in the name of public peace and safety were honoured at a ceremony at Confederation Building on Sunday.

The monument, erected in 2004, is dedicated to police and peace officers, 21 of whom in this province have lost their lives in the line of duty.

It was an emotional day for loved ones of the fallen, some of whom could be seen shedding a tear.

Helen Conway Ottenheimer, the minister of justice and public safety, says the 21 who have died have left a lasting legacy.

“As we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, we must also recognize those who have served in the past and those who continue to serve today,” said Minister Ottenheimer.

“Their dedication makes Newfoundland and Labrador a safe place to live, work and raise our families.”
