Wildlife officials are monitoring reports of a black bear near the town of Rocky Harbour.
A bear trap has been set up at the end of Butt’s Lane in the town and officials are urging people to stay away from any traps if they see one.
Black bears are typically searching for food this time of year as they fatten up for hibernation. Residents are asked to do their part by storing garbage and food properly to avoid attracting the animals.
The department is warning that wild animals can be dangerous and unpredictable if approached, and if you encounter a bear, take note of its behaviour and act accordingly.
In the meantime, any black bear sighting in the region should be called in to forestry officials in Pasadena at 709-632-9897.

According to wildlife officials ways to avoid attracting black bears include:
- Ensure garbage is stored and disposed of properly. Do not place garbage outside until the designated collection day.
- Remove fallen fruit from the ground.
- Do not leave food out for wild animals or birds.
- Do not put meat, bones, fish, oil, grease, dairy products, eggshells, garbage or large amounts of fruit in compost bins.
- Ensure outdoor cooking appliances and utensils are clean.
- Remove bird feeders from your yard.
- Where bears have been sighted, pet owners should keep their animals inside or under close supervision.

-
- Remain calm and avoid direct eye contact.
