A pumpkin is growing near Clarenville that some believe is on track to become the largest ever grown in this province.

Leslee Lake says the massive gourd is already larger than a 1034 pound giant he previously grew.

Lake, who has been growing pumpkins for years, says genetics play an important role in overall size.

He says it’s imperative to source the right seeds which are designed to grow to a larger size. He goes to great lengths to make sure he uses the best ones, and says he can trace the genetics of his pumpkins back through several generations.

Once the pumpkin he’s named “Pothole” is ready to be picked, Lake plans to set it up on his front lawn, and invite anyone interested to come and have a look.
