The MHA for Mount Scio says changes made to the Prince of Wales Collegiate School system make no sense.
NL Schools issued a letter to parents last week indicating that the catchment area is being reconfigured affecting Larkhall Academy, St. Andrew’s Elementary, Leary’s Brook Junior High and Prince of Wales Collegiate.
NL Schools says due to “demographic changes in the area,” the current Larkhall Academy catchment will be divided into two – one involving the Kenmount Terrace subdivision only and the other involving addresses outside Kenmount Terrace which will be added to the St. Andrew’s catchment.
That means that the new school in Kenmount Terrace, set to open for the 2027-28 school year and which will have an early French immersion program, will serve as a K-8 school for families in Kenmount Terrace only.
St. Andrew’s will change to K-3, Leary’s Brook will serve students in grades 4 to 8 and PWC will remain a 9 to 12 school.
Meanwhile, Larkhall Academy will no longer serve as an elementary school, so its future use will be evaluated.
Area MHA Sarah Stoodley told VOCM Open Line with Brian Callahan the changes don’t make sense.
“I do think it’s worth remembering that Leary’s Brook wasn’t…acceptable to Paul Dinn the education critic, but now it is acceptable to (Paul Dinn) the minister of education.”
Stoodley wants to see the numbers on Kenmount Terrace.
