A report by the Canadian Dental Association on the country’s dental care plan finds that about 4-million patients have availed of the coverage so far, but that some improvements are needed.
The report says the plan, which was first rolled out in 2024, has earned the confidence of patients, the public, and oral health providers.
The share of Canadians who report having no dental insurance has fallen from 35 per cent to 25 per cent since the program began, and most patients, 88 per cent, reporting a positive experience. Three quarters say their care is more affordable.
Most dentists now participate in the program, and most Canadians and dentists support it.

Dr. Aaron Burry, CEO of the association, says preauthorization denials and coverage limitations can keep patients from the care their dentist recommends. As well, some patients are confused about what is and what isn’t covered.
Dentists are proposing over 30 recommendations to further improve access to care and oral health outcomes for patients.
