A parent in Kenmount Terrace says she’s excited about a new school opening in her neighbourhood, but understands the frustration of those living outside the neighbourhood who won’t be able to avail of the new facility.
In a recent letter sent to parents, NLSchools explains that the catchment area has once again been reconfigured and only those living in Kenmount Terrace will be going to the new school when it opens in the upcoming school year.
Amanda Power, who has kids in Leary’s Brook Junior High and Larkhall Academy, says the kids at Leary’s Brook are playing in a gravel parking lot, and the school is well over capacity.
She says she couldn’t bring her kids’ school supplies back from Larkhall last year because of mouse droppings.
“For the parents that don’t live in Kenmount Terrace, I know their frustrations because at Larkhall last year, I couldn’t bring home my kids’ stuff at the end of the year because there were rodent droppings,” she told VOCM News.
“So I mean keeping kids in those schools is not necessarily the solution, just a stopgap.”
She says the next issue will be fixing potential traffic problems in the area.
“I think the city has some planning to do because Great Eastern and Ladysmith are quite busy and there’s a lot of young kids and there’s only one way into that school.”
“Keeping the kids from Kenmount Terrace there and not having buses coming from other areas will help, but you have this big school and you have Kenmount Terrace Rec Center with no connection to either.”
