The average wait time for people seeking to adopt an infant in Newfoundland and Labrador is approximately eight years.
That’s according to recent provincial government statistics.
There were 15 adoptions finalized in the province between October 1st and December 31st of 2018. 10 of those were within the province itself, while five were across provincial borders.
There were 55 applications for adoption received last year, and 60 were approved.
The province says there were 120 children identified for adoption. The wait for an infant is approximately eight years, while the wait for older children, that is over 2 years old with minimal or no known developmental issues, is approximately four to five years.
Applicants willing to accept children with complex needs, including larger sibling groups, or children over the age of 5, have significantly shorter wait times.
