The Anglican Church of Canada has voted against marriage equality, but a local church says it does not agree with the outcome.
The idea of including marriage equality within the Anglican marriage canon was defeated in a vote held during the General Synod Meeting in Vancouver on the weekend.
Father Mark Nichols of St. Mark’s Anglican Church says many people in the Anglican Church disagreed with the results.
The overwhelming majority of the delegates, clergy, lay members and bishops voted in favour of same sex marriage, but the way the policy is set, it can allow a minority within a small group to derail the vote. He says the overall will of the Anglican Church in Canada is to move forward with marriage equality.
Nichols was at the St. John’s Pride Parade yesterday.
He says that his church has been attending Pride for four years and that it’s a way to show the Anglican Church of Canada what they believe in.
He says there are same-gender members of his congregation who hope to be married in their own church.
