A woman from Upper Gullies made a generous donation to the Royal Canadian Legion over the weekend, and in return the organization is going to make sure the kind gesture lives on.
On Saturday, Madonna Porter donated her entire collection of dolls and other memorabilia, worth about $250,000, after hearing of the hard times the legion had fallen upon since COVID-19
The items will be auctioned off and a portion of the funds will be used by the Legion to create a bursary or scholarship, which will be in Porter’s name and the name of her late daughter – who died in 2015 at age 42.
The president of Royal Canadian Legion Branch One, Greg Greening, says it’s a way for them to show their appreciation for what she has done for them.
He says it’s their way of saying thank you to her.
For Mrs. Porter, knowing her collection is going to do some good is all that matters.
She says her dreams have come true because all her work is going to go to a place where it will be remembered and appreciated.
