The mother of a young man killed in a car accident 26 years ago is stressing the life-giving importance of organ donation.
Rita’s Spurrell’s son Chad died in 1994 at the age of 18. The budding biathlete and cadet was a passenger in a car that crashed near Rattling Brook while on the way to Corner Brook to try out for the provincial biathlon team.
Spurrell says it was her son who insisted that he and his parents sign their donation cards on the day he got his driver’s licence.
She called VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly on Tuesday with an important message after some backlash yesterday over Nova Scotia changing its policy on organ donation, assuming all people are donors unless they sign a statement to opt-out.
Spurrell wishes for people to take the example that Chad took as it could be your family or best friend the next time.
Chad Spurrell’s two kidneys and liver ended up giving life to three other people.
