The New Democrats are promising to reinstate a home-heating rebate program and pay for it by making better spending choices if they form government on February 13.
NDP Leader Alison Coffin pointed to the $41-million recently funneled to the West White Rose offshore oil project to maintain jobs in hopes of a restart next year.
She noted the NDP’s home-heating rebate program would cost about $15-million and trigger other positive spinoffs.
Coffin says instead of putting millions into stalled offshore oil projects with no guarantee of a re-start, the money should go into the hands of people who need it now to heat their homes, stabilize their situations, and put it back into the economy down the road.
The program would provide up to $250 for households on the island with less than $40,000 of income and up to $500 a year for those living in coastal Labrador.
Heating your home is not optional. Our winters are long and hard and living without heat is just not on the table for folks in this province. Giving people a break on this cost is going to make life easier for students, seniors and single-parent families in our community. #nlpoli https://t.co/A9GgSUTnml
