An app is helping to get food to those who need it most in the province.
Newfoundland and Labrador has one of the highest rates of food insecurity among all Canadian provinces.
14.7% of households in our province struggle to afford food to put on their tables.
Josh Smee, executive director of Food First NL says Canadians waste 800 pounds per person per year.
He says there’s a national organization called Food Rescue which has an app to help connect organizations who need food.
Smee says they run an online platform to connect stores and businesses like restaurants with community organizations when they are looking for food. He says you register for the app if you are a meal program or a store or restaurant; people post what they have to offer and the organizations get a ding on their phones and they can decide if they want it and then go pick it up.
Smee says with the quick turn-around time that means perishable foods can be an option and gives food programs a bit more choice.
