Newfoundland Power is giving back to the community by transforming an area in Broad Cove that was devastated by last year’s wildfires into a public greenspace.
The woods around the Melvin Burden Memorial Ball Park in Broad Cove were razed when fires roared through the region last August, but a pool in the nearby brook proved a godsend for local firefighters, allowing their pumper truck to access precious water.

Newfoundland Power is including work in the area as one of five environmental projects selected as part of its annual EnviroFest initiative.
Plans are to turn the fire-ravaged area next to the ballfield into a trailhead greenspace with accessible paths, benches and new planting.
