Twillingate has made it to the top four finalists for Kraft Hockeyville’s annual contest.
Twillingate and the George Hawkins Arena are up against Pense, Saskatchewan, Saint-Felicien Quebec and Tyne Valley, PEI.
The town put on a spirited campaign, sharing historic photos and accounts of its storied hockey past. The George Hawkins arena is an old airport hanger that was dismantled and moved from Gander to Twillingate back in the 60s to replace the existing outdoor rink. The arena is the home is of the Twillingate Combines, who won consecutive three All Newfoundland championships in the 1980s with teams made up entirely of local players.
The $250,000 Kraft Hockeyville grand prize will go a long way for Twillingate if successful. They’re hoping to replace their chiller and Zamboni, and fix the arena’s leaking roof as well as upgrade their dressing room and washroom facilities.
Online voting for the grand prize winning entry opens August 14.
