Harbour Grace RCMP are on the hunt for a man who escaped lawful custody last night.
Police say 44-year-old Jai Stagg of Carbonear was arrested for impaired driving in a traffic stop last night but fled the scene. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.
RCMP were investigating reports of a theft, and a Pontiac G6 driving erratically, when they stopped the suspect vehicle on the Veteran’s Memorial near Harbour Grace around 11 p.m.

Stagg was arrested for impaired driving, but when the officer tried to get him out of the vehicle, Stagg put the car in drive and sped away from the scene.
Stagg was spotted a short time later but police did not pursue him in the interest of public safety.
An arrest warrant has been issued on charges of flight from police, dangerous driving, impaired driving, being unlawfully at large, and theft under $5,000.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Stagg or his car—a four-door burgundy Pontiac G6 with licence plate number JHB590—is asked to contact RCMP at 709-596-5014 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
