Two hikers are safe and sound after becoming lost in the Lewis Hills, near Fox Island River on the west coast.

Bay St. George RCMP say the hikers were reported missing on Wednesday shortly before noon after failing to show up at a designated check-in point.

Stephenville, Kippens, and Port Au Port Ground Search and Rescue mobilized and traveled 29 kilometers on ATV, before searching for an additional five hours on what is described “very difficult and challenging terrain.”

The hikers, a 65-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman, were found at about 6:00 that evening. The man was taken to hospital in Stephenville for a medical assessment.

Police are reminding the public of the importance of sharing your route and return plans with a contact person.
