High winds in the east, heavy snow in the west and parts of Labrador sums up the extreme weather picture in the province today.
Winds reached triple digits in metro overnight and will remain high throughout the day according to Rodney Barney, a meteorologist with the Environment Canada.
Peak gusts recorded at St. John’s international reached 115 km/h while gusts at Cape Pine topped 130 km/h.
The west coast and southern and central Labrador are the snow belts in this system with more to come today.
A winter storm watch is out for the stretch from Corner Brook to Hawkes Bay.
He says another 5-10 cm is expected on the west coast with about 15-20 cm for Labrador, maybe even 30 cm in some parts.
There are scattered power outages in metro and a significant one on Change Islands and Fogo Island. Crews from NL Hydro will be on the first ferry to the islands to investigate. Power lines are down across the road on Bayview Street in Twillingate but the road is passable.
