A structural assessment on the George Hawkins Arena in Twillingate shows that the building needs some significant upgrades.
Mayor Grant White says while the $250,000 dollars won in the recent Kraft Hockeyville contest will go a long way, more funding might be required to get all the needed work done.
White says replacement of the roof alone has been assessed at $200,000 dollars.
The building also needs improvements to the ventilation system, electrical and mechanical upgrades, a new chiller and a new Zamboni.
White says $10,000 dollars of new hockey gear from the NHLPA, which arrived this week, will be distributed through the local minor hockey association.
In the meantime, planning is still in the works for an NHL game which may occur sometime in the fall. They’re still not sure which teams might be involved, or whether the game will be held in Twillingate or a nearby facility.
