Those in the industry expect significant growth in the province’s tech sector over the next few years, and one of the places industry leaders will be looking to fill the gaps is high schools.
Yesterday, funding was announced for a TechNL initiative to create a technology talent office, focusing on four different areas, one of which is high school.
TechNL CEO Paul Preston says part of what the program will do is build awareness about technology careers and show students that they don’t have to leave, that they can thrive and have amazing careers here.

The provincial government has announced funding for a new Tech Talent Strategy by TechNL.
Government is giving the organization $1.87-million for what’s being called a “tech pipeline.”

According to Minister of Immigration, Skills, and Labour, Gerry Byrne, TechNL will be creating a technology talent office that will establish offices in four areas: a local talent lead, an immigration lead, a skills mentoring lead, and a high school technology lead.
According to Paul Preston, CEO of TechNL, the office is still a few months away from being up and running.
He says they are looking at a four-month ramp up to get the offices up and running, during that time they will establish a plan for how to proceed.
