A Labrador MHA is concerned that last week’s formal establishment of an inquiry into search and rescue was political window-dressing in the leadup to the provincial election.
What’s more, Lela Evans says the silence and delay regarding a second inquiry into Innu children in care is also worrisome.
The latter inquiry promised to begin in 2017, has been repeatedly delayed since then. The government said it would start in 2020, but it still hasn’t happened.
Evans believes she knows why. She thinks many people are apprehensive about what will be revealed during the inquiry, including the failures of current and past governments.
In a statement to VOCM News, the government says it is currently in “caretaker” mode due to the election but will provide an update after the February 13th vote.
However, they do note funding was allocated for the Innu children in care inquiry as part of the most recent budget.
