A quiet space to escape the workplace has been unveiled at RNC headquarters in St. John’s.
Stella’s Wellness Corner, named for the RNC’s new support dog, is a partnership between the police force and mining giant Vale.
The space, outfitted with cozy furniture, is designed to create a calming feel through the use of colour, plants and artwork, giving staff a place to detach themselves from their work environment, thereby putting the focus on mental wellness.
Retiring RNC Chief Joe Boland says the inability to find a space free from work-related duties and spaces can have a significant impact on the mental health of employees.
“Policing is complex and unpredictable, and this space will always be here for staff to take the time we all need to step away and release, without interruption from the workplace,” said Boland.
He says the new space will complement the existing Mental Health Mobile Crisis Response Team, in addition to other new initiatives including RNC support dog services, equine therapy for first responders, chaplaincy program, and its peer support program.
