One candidate running for St. John’s City Council is providing her perspective on accessibility in the city.
Anne Malone is running for councillor at large and navigates the city with a guide dog, as she is visually impaired.
Malone says she has the privilege of being very mobile and she relies on accessible crosswalks that have an audio capability to let people with a visual impairment cross safely.
However, the audio function at the intersection at the bottom of Kenna’s Hill, one of what she calls the “handful” of accessible crosswalks in the city, has not worked in months, while the intersection has been under construction for weeks.
Malone found herself stranded at the intersection at rush hour.
She says a gentleman had to get out of his car and stop traffic to assist her. She understands that work has to be done but believes that on one of the city’s few accessible crosswalks, that should be a priority.
“We can’t see it coming,” she says. “We are in trouble before we realize there is trouble.” If there is no consistency, then visibly impaired persons cannot put faith in them.
