Port Rexton is taking a proactive approach to a group of teens who recently “borrowed” two picnic tables from the popular Skerwink Trail—and it’s already getting positive reaction from residents.
The town posted to Facebook this week indicating council knows who took the tables, which have since been recovered, and instead of laying charges, they’re offering up an alternative to kids for a place to hang out.
The town says the area chosen by the teens is close to some area seniors’ units and is in a wooded area which could have serious consequences should a fire break out during what has been an unusually dry summer.
The town council is offering up a space for the young people to gather, offering to provide a picnic table, garbage containers and a sand bucket in a gravel open space across from the Municipal Building and near the new beach volleyball court.
The town says the trial partnership, for the next couple of weeks, is on condition that the area is kept clean, and undamaged.
