Electric vehicle charging stations may soon become more accessible in the capital city.
St. John’s City Council is moving forward with a project that would see the installation of 24 electric vehicle charging stations throughout the city.
Of the 24, 14 would be for public use while the other 10 would be in city facilities for future electric vehicles in their fleet.
The total cost of the project is over $300,000. The federal government will cover just over $117,000 through the Zero Emissions Vehicle Infrastructure Program. The rest of the project will be funded by the city, but they say there is the potential for up to $60,000 in sponsorship opportunities to offset the costs.
Installation is expected to take place between October of this year and early 2023, with the public spaces being the first to receive the units.
Councillor Ian Froude says the stations help address something called “range anxiety.”
He explains that if people are worried about running out of battery, it will help put their minds at ease knowing that there are charging stations nearby.
