Third doses of the COVID vaccine are being offered to those who are immunocompromised, and it’s likely that annual boosters may be necessary for the general public in future.
That’s according to Michael Grant, a professor of immunology at the Faculty of Medicine at MUN.
He’s been conducting a study into the level of antibodies a person has in response to both the vaccine and in patients who have recovered from COVID-19. Those findings have suggested that immunity to COVID-19 wanes over time.
He wishes there were far fewer cases, but he expects that a lot will be learned by studying breakthrough infections among those who caught COVID after being vaccinated. That will help to answer questions about whether there are gaps in immunity in certain people, or whether COVID immunity wanes over time.
Those looking to book a third dose of COVID-19 vaccine can do so by contacting their Regional Health Authority, or online by selecting “Second Dose” when booking an appointment.
