The provincial government has announced a program to tackle what they’re calling “period poverty” in the province.
The province says beginning immediately, dispensers of tampons and pads will be installed in schools throughout the province, particularly targeting schools with grades 4 and above.
By this coming January, the program will be in full effect, to the cost of $30,000.
The province says the program will help lift barriers to education that can result in missed opportunities, uncomfortable conversations and unhygienic solutions.
They cite statistics from Plan International Canada that states that in 2019, 63 per cent of Canadian women had to miss a regular activity due to concerns about accessing such products, while 34 per cent of women and girls had to regularly sacrifice something else in their budget to buy menstrual products.
They say the dispensers will allow students to get the products they need in a discrete and affordable manner.
