The capital city’s legal team is looking at a recent Supreme Court decision that could make municipalities liable if a citizen gets injured by a slip or fall due to snow clearing.
The decision stems from a case involving a woman who injured her leg climbing a snowbank in Nelson, British Columbia back in 2015.
Currently, municipalities are not liable for policy decisions, but Thursday’s ruling determined that snow removal was an operational decision. That means that cities across the country could be liable for injuries caused by snow clearing.
A spokesperson for the city of St. John’s says its legal team is reviewing the decision and preparing to brief council.
