It has been a tough 20 months for many organizations, including Daffodil Place in St. John’s.
That’s why their 24-hour One Night Stand Radiothon today on VOCM is so important.
Many of their in-person fundraising events were suspended or scaled back.
That’s had a significant impact on their operations, as Daffodil Place has to raise $700,000 a year just to keep the lights on.
The facility, located on Ropewalk Lane, is a home-away-from-home for cancer patients and their supports, who have to travel long distances for treatment.
Al Pelley, the director of revenue development for the Cancer Society, says it costs about $115 for one night’s stay, but those who avail of the service are charged only $25.
Pelley says if not for the subsidized accommodations, some patients would probably miss their appointments.
The Department of Health and community services has made a $50,000 donation in support of Daffodil place.
Health Minister John Haggie says both his personal and professional lives have been “profoundly” affected by people with Cancer.
Haggie says his late nephew used to avail of Daffodil Place when at the Janeway for treatments and couldn’t speak highly enough of the facility.
He says staff really make it a home away from home, and it’s as good as someone can get without being in their own bed.
