Three teenagers accused of a fatal stabbing in the Goulds last year will soon have their cases called together for the first time since they were charged.
20-year-old Brandon Leftault was found bleeding on Sunset Street around 10:30 p.m. on April 2, 2020.
He was rushed to hospital but reportedly died of blood loss from a stab wound to his leg.
In March, almost a year later, three young men were arrested and charged with manslaughter, robbery and public mischief—in other words giving false information to police. Two of them were just shy of 18 at the time of the crime, so they can’t be named.
But the third, Jonathan Mathioudakis, had just turned 18 and last week had his case called again in adult court.
That’s when it was decided to call all three next week at the same time to discuss how the case should proceed.
While two of the accused weren’t yet 18 at the time, they could still be sentenced as adults if convicted. In fact, the Crown is obligated to at least consider adult sentences for older teens in such cases, ranging anywhere from probation to life in prison.
Manslaughter is third on the rung for homicide after first and second degree murder, the key difference being whether there was intent to kill.
The case is due back in provincial court on December 7.
