A rally is scheduled today at the Coast Guard site on the south side of St. John’s Harbour as members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada and the Union of Canadian Transportation Employees have reached an impasse in negotiations with Treasury Board.
The unions argue that Coast Guard employees did not have the option of working from home during the pandemic and says that the employer needs to come to the bargaining table with what they call a fair wage offer that keeps up with skyrocketing inflation.
The union reps say many Coast Guard workers are experiencing a widening wage gap compared to their private-sector counterparts, affecting morale.
Today’s rally is scheduled for noon at the Marine Rescue Centre in St. John’s.
