There’s a whale sighting of a different sort in Conception Bay near Portugal Cove.
DFO says Tangly Whales, a group contracted by DFO, received a call about a dead sperm whale floating in Conception Bay on the evening of June 2.
The Department of Fisheries says there were no indications of any entanglements of the male whale at the time, and a navigation warning was issued for mariners.
Sperm whales are deep-sea feeders and are not frequently seen inshore although there were some sightings in Conception and Trinity bays in recent years.
DFO says there are lobster pots in the area, and the carcass may have become entangled after the animal died.
