The Town of Ferryland is honouring one of its own.
A monument will be unveiled Saturday to celebrate the life and work of Ron Hynes, considered to be one of the province’s best songwriters.
Raised in Ferryland, “The Man of a Thousand Songs”, was the recipient of numerous provincially and national music awards in a career spanning over 30 years. He moved back to Ferryland just before his death in 2015.
Chair of the committee for the commemorative monument, Keith Mooney says they were first approached by St. John’s artist Jud Haynes before the pandemic derailed plans. In 2021, they were able to get the project back on track with the formation of the committee. He says it was important the monument be in Ferryland.
Mooney calls Hynes an “icon” in Newfoundland and Labrador, with his songs being covered by artists all over Canada. He says with Hynes representing this province, it’s only fitting the monument be in his hometown.
The monument will be unveiled Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Regional Arts Centre in Ferryland.
