It’s been a hot one these last few days, and the staff at Westbury Estates are working to make sure one of the most vulnerable populations is protected.
Highs in metro have been in the upper 20s all week, with humidex values into the high 30s prompting heat warnings for a couple of days.
As such, the seniors home has been under specific hydration protocols over the last few days to keep residents safe.
Staff have been utilizing hydration carts and have been pushing fluids, ice cream, and freezies to cool people off.
As well, they have modified their menus to cooler food, adjusted their recreation programming, and are monitoring the use of outdoor space to watch time in the sun and to ensure people have something to drink, a hat and sunscreen.
They have also implemented more stringent protocols for medications and check-ins on those residents.
General Manager Natasha Dalton says despite the heat, residents are having fun.
She says there has been a lot of excitement in the building, and they are trying make the best of the situation.
