A 46-year-old man is facing serious charges after a police officer was dragged along the highway by a vehicle that pulled out of a checkpoint on the weekend.
RCMP say the car stopped at the checkpoint near the intersection of the New Harbour Barrens and the main highway in Trinity Bay South.
Officers at the scene asked for his licence, but when they asked him to turn off his car, he refused, and pulled out, dragging a police officer on the road.
The officer was able to free himself and the car sped away. He was treated in hospital and released.
Another officer attempted to pursue the suspect, but aborted the chase in the interest of safety.
The vehicle was eventually stopped in Blaketown after a roadblock was set up.
The driver is now facing charges of flight from police, assaulting a police officer and dangerous driving.
