One of the main things in which other jurisdictions are doing better than Newfoundland and Labrador, according to the National President of CUPE, is consultation.
CUPE NL is holding its annual convention at the Delta in St. John’s this week.
Mark Hancock says there are two jurisdictions where things are going “much better”—those being BC and Manitoba, where they have NDP governments.
He says in those provinces, union leaders and frontline workers are brought to the table for “meaningful discussions.”
Here, for example, he says he has heard of government calling the provincial president 15 minutes before the announcement is made. “That’s not consultation; that’s telling us what’s going to happen.”
