The minister responsible for tourism says car rentals are still available for bookings in the province, but he admits the options are limited.
Steve Crocker was responding to concerns raised by owners of the Fishers’ Loft in Port Rexton, who say they’ve had several cancellations because guests couldn’t secure a rental vehicle.
Crocker told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly that his officials meet with car rental agencies on a quarterly basis to discuss ways to increase the number of vehicles available to rent.
“I talked to an operator this week and they’ve been growing their fleet, they’re getting new fleet in,” he said, adding as of this week there were still car rentals available for each week of the summer.
But he noted the numbers are dwindling.
“Unfortunately, likely, there will come a time this season that car rental availability will become a major problem, a major struggle.”
Crocker says booking early is key, which ensures availability and allows rental companies to plan for the season by shuffling their vehicles around.
