The new Community Park in Conception Bay South is proving to be a popular attraction in town, but an increased incidence of vandalism, especially in the evening hours, has prompted the town to make some changes.
The public washroom and change facilities will be locked up at 7:00 p.m.
Deputy Mayor Andrea Gosse says they’ve seen a number of serious acts of vandalism at the site, culminating with a fire in one of the public change rooms and washroom facilities.
“Somewhere around April 20 we discovered that someone had started a fire in the sink in the bathroom using some of the bathroom toilet paper,” says Gosse. One evening two change tables were broken, and at one point knife damage was caused to the play matting. “So we decided, unfortunately,” says Gosse “to close our washroom facilities earlier in the evening, so around…7:00 these facilities are being locked up.”
