Premier Andrew Furey is adding his voice to those sharing condolences on the passing of writer, commentator and broadcaster Rex Murphy who passed away this week at the age of 77.
Furey says Murphy’s “quick wit and mastery of words were unmatched” and he calls his presence “significant.”
Furey says Rex’s commentary was bound to capture sentiment, whether or not one agreed with his views, and through it all, he remained a “fierce advocate for his home province.”
Furey recalls it was Murphy’s reporting and commentary following the 1992 cod moratorium that brought the scale of the economic and personal impact on Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to the rest of the country.
Former anchor of The National, Peter Mansbridge says Rex Murphy was one of the people he was asked most frequently about.
“He made people think,” says Mansbridge.
