A facility which caters to adults with special needs is closed for the time-being after smoke damaged the large commercial building in which it is housed.
The fire broke out over the supper hour, but there were no injuries as there were no people inside the structure.
Located on Shaw Street in the west end of St. John’s, the building is owned by plumbing company Smith Stockley. Some of its property, including a delivery vehicle, was damaged or destroyed.
Gary Furlong, the executive director of the Geraldine Rubia Centre, says its space incurred smoke damage. In addition to hosting numerous activities for people, they also rent out the space and prepare meals.
They have been in touch with professional cleaners to see when the facility can reopen. There are rentals scheduled but he’s asking anyone planning to have an activity there to contact him at 709-722-4338.
