The suspect in a violent holdup at a bank machine in Mount Pearl will ask to be released on bail today.
Thirty-two-year-old Justin James White was arrested Saturday and faces a single charge of robbery with violence in connection with the incident less than 48 hours earlier.
He appeared briefly in court yesterday, and remains in custody pending his bid for bail this afternoon.
The incident itself occurred just after midnight Friday morning in the ATM foyer of a bank on Commonwealth Avenue.
The RNC’s James Cadigan says the woman was just going about her business when the man walked in behind her.
“This woman was looking to use the ATM machine and was approached by that man as she did so,” he said. “There was an assault and the man did obtain cash.”
It’s not clear what, if any, injuries the woman suffered, or how much cash was allegedly stolen, nor would Cadigan identify the bank in question.
The male suspect fled the scene before police could get there. But he was arrested around 5:30 Saturday, just a few hours after the RNC released images of the suspect to media and they were posted online.
Cadigan says sometimes no amount of vigilance can prevent such crimes of opportunity.
“I wouldn’t want to put the blame on the person who was robbed here yet,” he said. “Essentially, this was a criminal act. These are events that are simply disgusting and we intend to hold individuals accountable who are going to put our community at risk, and in this case we were able to make an arrest by Saturday afternoon.”
