Hundreds descended upon the foregrounds of Government House yesterday for the Lieutenant Governor’s annual garden party.
It was Joan Marie Aylward’s first time hosting the event, after succeeding Judy Foote earlier this year.
And she took full credit for the picture-perfect weather conditions.
The garden party has come to symbolize the multicultural melting pot of St. John’s and the province, with local traditional and Indigenous culture mixing with those from South America to East India and Asia.
The common denominator, said the Lieutenant Governor, is family.
“I think you will notice what’s so wonderful is the number of families that are here. It’s a family event. It’s really what we hoped for,” she said. “We have a lot of first-timers, we have great attractions. When you look at the mounted unit, the horses, they draw a crowd anyway. But the music and the families and the entertainment, we’re loving it.”
