The captain of the Ocean Choice offshore trawler the Katshetshuk II is encouraged by what his crew encountered while fishing for the first offshore northern cod to be caught and processed in Newfoundland and Labrador since the moratorium was declared.
Captain Peter Melvin says conditions in 2J off the coast of southern Labrador were a bit rough, but the catch rates were “great.”
“Tow times were short, it was excellent. Excellent quality of fish, great looking fish….it’s a bright future for the codfish I think.”
