The minister responsible for persons with disabilities says he no longer wants the Disability Advocate to fall under the purview of the Seniors’ Advocate.
Earlier this year, a review of all statutory offices of the House of Assembly was done and one of the recommendations was to broaden the role of the Seniors’ Advocate to include those with complex needs.
MHA Jamie Korab says he has meetings planned with the Coalition of Persons with Disabilities and others through August to talk about the need for a stand alone advocate.
He says it won’t be until the fall sitting before government can appoint someone to the position.
“My department sent out letters to about 20 groups that are advocates for persons with disabilities,” he told VOCM News.
“We’ve heard back from a number of them, so we’re looking at in the next two weeks to set up meetings with one or all of them, separate meetings, because we want to hear from the advocates, the people that know what they want to see in this disability advocate.”
