Education Minister Paul Dinn says government will not allow Memorial University to balance the books on the backs of students, until it gets its fiscal house in order.
He says until Memorial deals with administrative bloat, government will ensure that tuition at MUN will not increase.
“Part of that is no tuition increases until we see, or are confident that Memorial University are addressing their fiscal challenges. So right now, until we see that, there’s a tuition freeze for this year.”
The minister says he was surprised the Canadian Federation of Students issued its news release this morning, saying he prefers to make announcements when the details are known, but he doesn’t fault the federation for putting the news out there.
“Nicholas (Keough) does his job well, that’s his job, that’s what he does, he’s supporting his students, and we had a great meeting.” He says he wasn’t aware that the Federation of Students release was coming out, “but it’s out there.”
