Of all the promises made by politicians last year, St. John’s councillor Donnie Earle’s takes the cake.
The wedding cake, that is.
Yesterday was council’s first public meeting of the year, during which Earle said he made two key promises if elected.
One, to be an accessible and hard-working councillor; the other, to tie the knot with his longtime partner and supporter.
“I promised my partner of 15 years that, if I was successful in getting elected to city council, that I would make her an Earle,” he said. “So, with the help of our mayor today, I’m going to marry Sandra LeGrow.”
And that’s exactly what he did right after yesterday’s meeting, with Mayor Danny Breen doing the honours.
It’s rare, and may be the first time a mayor has performed the nuptials for a councillor in chambers, let alone after the weekly public meeting.
